Nuwara Eliya, affectionately nicknamed 'Little England', is a premier hill country resort town nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka at an altitude of 1,868 meters above sea level. Founded by British explorer Samuel Baker in 1846, Nuwara Eliya served as the preferred cool-climate sanctuary for British civil servants, planters, and officials seeking refuge from tropical lowland heat. The town exudes a distinct British country-village ambiance, characterized by well-preserved colonial-era bungalows, Tudor and Georgian-style architecture, manicured hedgerows, the historic Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, and the quaint red-brick Post Office. Surrounded by emerald-green mountains blanketed in world-famous Ceylon tea plantations, Nuwara Eliya sits at the heart of the island’s tea-producing industry. Natural attractions abound in and around the city, including the picturesque Gregory Lake for boating and pony rides, the sprawling Victoria Park, the vibrant local vegetable markets, and nearby breathtaking cascades like Ramboda Falls, Lover's Leap, and Devon Falls. Just a short drive away lie the magnificent Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the high-altitude wilderness of Horton Plains National Park. With its crisp, spring-like mountain climate and nostalgic charm, Nuwara Eliya remains an essential highland haven.
